Remembering the Great East Japan Earthquake of 11 March 2011

OJA would like to share a short video: “Distant Wind” by Rui Kudo. It is based on her personal experience of the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011, which caused the tsunami and nuclear accident at Fukushima.

She is a Japanese artist currently studying Contemporary Art at the University of Edinburgh, and would like to share what is a deeply personal narrative as widely as possible because she believes  “it also serves as a reflection on the universal themes of time and life amidst the ongoing challenges of war and disasters in our contemporary world”.

The 13th anniversary of this disaster is a good time to reflect on both the short and the longer term effects of such events on both the individual and society.  Those of us directly affected by such events will never forget them, and the hardships they cause, but at the same time we should not forget how disasters also bring communities together to support each other, and work towards a better future.
