The Sea! The Sea! Tides and Transformations at the Ship of Fools gallery in Kirkwall – September 2023
Between 400 and 500 people visited this week long exhibition and took part in the linked origami workshops at Kirkwall and Stromness Libraries and talk by Dr Neil Banas and team at the Picky Centre.
Arranged at short notice to see what might be possible, our first project with the Science Festival focussed on marine creatures, rock pools and different aspects of the sea and all its aspects. Orkney artists collaborated with visiting scientists and artists to paint a picture of life in the sea in broad strokes. We had the marine food chain from phytoplankton to gannet done in origami and crochet, and fashion made from ocean trash as well as ships in bottles. Something for everyone of all ages.
We looked at the sea from another angle, joining with the Science Festival again to explore the subject of seaweed in Orkney and Japan in 2024.
