Orkney and Japan connected through kimono

Published on Mar 19, 2025

This doll is about 100 years old.  She came to Orkney from Kobe, wearing a kimono very like one given to a Scottish bride who sailed to Japan in the 1920s to get married. That kimono has come down in the family together with the doll — but has never been worn.

Will her Orcadian great granddaughter be the first to try it on?

Come to Kirkwall Library and find out more about how Orkney and Japan are connected, and more about kimono and weddings too.
